Dear Colleague, Friend of Progress and Concerned Patriot:
The experience of the last thirty years has shown the determining role that radio broadcasting has played in the process of development of the Haitian community in South Florida.
The initiative of the protagonists to institute the first Haitian radio program in Miami was fundamentally conceived and considered a useful deed for, as long as, the multiplication of subsequent broadcasts did increase considerably the list of media that contribute to the systematic development of the Haitian community of Miami, which has become to be known as the “Capital of the Haitian Diaspora.”
It was precisely, Saturday, June 10, 1978.
Desiring to surpass the outdated customs of “mouth to mouth” and the distribution of flyers in public places to announce upcoming events, we seized the opportunity to launch on the airwaves, on Saturday, June 10, 1978, the first press medium that we have named: Express Publicite.
This new modern means of communication was now facilitating our small Haitian population, recently arrived from Haiti, which was estimated then to be at no more than 4,000, to have access to general information about their new community as it pertained to immigration; current events in the United States and Haiti.
Among this new group that was struggling for a piece o the pie, in the midst of a hostile society, there were, in increasing number, compatriot-leaders that opted for the consolidation of ideas converging toward the establishment of community organization.
Despite a period of trial and error, numerous changes took place, from decade, and due to the joint efforts and consented sacrifices of, certain achievements were thus preserved.
Should we not continue to educate the public about the undertakings and actions of the past, in other words, about the history of our recent and dynamic community, so that, our newly-arrived brothers and sisters know that, all was done, n order to secure those welcoming centers, which today, they benefit from. That they not be told, that it was with a magic stick, they found an established community. Is it unpleasant to hear people say, “What did the old-timers accomplished?”
We should not forget either that some witnesses, or even those who have helped, do not care and tend to discard the inestimable efforts invested to this structure. We, of the antecedent generation, have a duty to constantly remind the new generation all that was done to make this community what it is today.
Dear colleagues, friends of progress and concerned patriots, it is in the light of this trajectory that we extend this cordial invitation to you in order to take an active part in the ceremonies commemorating the thirtieth anniversary of Express Publicité.
This solemn celebration take place at the “Intercontinental Hotel ”, 100 Chopin Plaza in Miami on Saturday June 28, 2008 at 7:00 PM.
